There are few better ways to see the stunning Italian countryside than by train. Watching the green hills roll by as you make your way from Rome to Assisi is the perfect kick off an unforgettable day in Umbria.
Your day will kick off at the Roma Termini in the centre of the Eternal City, where you’ll get a regional train to Assisi-Santa Maria delgi Angeli (Assisi station). You can buy a ticket at the station or book your trip beforehand on the Trenitalia website. Either way, it will cost you between 10€ and 17€ and take one and a half hours. The train ride will take you north to Italy’s “Green Heart”, winding your way between hills and through valleys past picturesque medieval towns.
Assisi town is more than a walk from the station, but there’s no need to worry as there are plenty of buses and taxis to take you into town. The C bus runs once every 30 minutes, with a travel time of six minutes to the Assisi-Piazza Unita’ d’Italia in the town centre. You can purchase a ticket at the station for about 1.50€. If you don’t feel like waiting for the bus, you can take a taxi into town from outside the station. Fares for the trip are set at 15€ and you needn’t tip your driver.
From the Assisi-Piazza bus terminal, you’ll be able to explore the famous birthplace of St Francis. This medieval town is home to some of the Italy’s most significant religious and historical sites. There are plenty of things to do in Assisi for little or no cost, including viewing the Basilica of Saint Francis and exploring cobblestone streets. It’s a good idea to work your way up to the top of town on your sightseeing adventure. Then, when the day is done, you can catch the C bus from the Piazza Matteotti back to the Assisi station and head back to Rome.
